After her mother’s death in 1980, Marianne Lieberman reads the letters her father wrote to her mother during the First World War. The letters reveal facts that lead Lieberman to search her mother’s memorabilia stored in her attic. She finds surprising revelations—answers to mysteries that now add an unexpected turn to her story. Lieberman was born in 1927 in Vienna, Austria, to her middle-aged parents, who both grew up in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The daughter of a Jewish father, and therefore a “Mischling of the first degree,” she survives the Nazi persecution and immigrates to the United States in 1947. Lieberman’s artistic talent is the one thing that could not be stolen from her. Her art becomes the key to her self-development.
